When we were young, it was easy to dream. We wanted to be astronauts, doctors, or whatever looked fun and exciting. We didn’t know what it meant to do any of those things. We just lived in a world where it was all possible.
Then life happened, and dreams became impractical and irresponsible. We were told we could be anything we wanted, but we were also shown just one path to go down and one set of rules to follow. Eventually, we learned that this path wasn’t made for us because we had bigger plans for our lives. After all, we’d never stopped dreaming.
It’s been especially hard these days to hang on to those dreams. The tensions in the world are distracting, and they take us off course. Many of us had to pivot and take a new approach to find customers and delivering our products and services because the pandemic meant it was no longer business as usual.
And people are struggling to keep it together much less to move forward. Fear has started to overcome hope and we’re all so exhausted from trying to fight the good fight. But we can’t stay here. We can’t let fear and uncertainty win the day.
You already have plenty of inner dialogue going on about why your dream is too risky or why you’re not ready. We tell ourselves we need to know more, we can’t afford the risk, others are already doing what we want to do, and maybe we’re just not cut out for this. But those thoughts aren’t who you are. They don’t define you or decide what you do next. You do.
You’ve already shown your resilience through this time of incredible struggle. You’ve already proven that inner voice wrong as it tries to slow you down. Now it’s time to take the next steps and go all-in on your dream.
Your dreams matter because they give you purpose. They show you that there’s another path, a path made for you because it’s made by you. And this makes the struggle worth it.
But there’s a bigger reason why your dreams matter. When you choose to pursue your dreams and don’t hesitate to show the world what you’re made of, it gives others hope as they see what’s possible. Then, there’s a ripple effect as you inspire others to act, and their actions inspire others. So, while you help people through the work you do, you also inspire them by setting an example of pursuing your dreams.
This is how you become a leader. Because when you hold a vision and thoughtfully pursue your dreams, that’s a demonstration of leadership. And the world could use your leadership right now.
When others struggle and feel hopeless, you can be a light for them as you show them how it’s done. And seeing your influence on them will, in turn, provide you with fuel to keep going. And you’re going to need that fuel because pursuing your dreams isn’t easy work. We don’t do it because it’s easy. We do it because it gives us purpose and because we know it matters to others.
If you’re already a dreamer and this thinking comes easy to you, then keep on dreaming and start taking action. That dream is the start of something, but it won’t go anywhere or be seen by anyone if you don’t take meaningful action to honor your dreams and bring them to life.
If you struggle with creating a vision for your future and with describing your ideal business and life, you’re not alone. The world has been telling us to set our dreams aside and follow the rules, so it’s no wonder we’ve forgotten how to do this. It might feel selfish or even scary because your dream is so different from where you are now. But don’t let that stop you from dreaming. Start by surrounding yourself with other dreamers to learn and be inspired.
Your dream doesn’t have to be detailed or way out in the future. Start with envisioning what you want next month, next year, and work your way further out in time. Think about what truly lights you up, how you want to make a difference, and what it would look like if you went to the next level in your life and your business.
